Insight into Dark Age Justice – Sherriff Adam Christianson

Sheriff Make Carona and Lee Baca

Year after year, the treadmill of unbelievable behavior and outrageous actions at the Stanislaus Sheriff’s Department continues to go round-and-round, costing us money, safety and trust.    The Sheriff’s Department is the organization entrusted to by us, and empowered by law to carry out these functions.

Sustained dysfunction and cultural cruelty within any organization can only be placed at the feet of its leader.  Period – the tone and buck starts and stops at the top.   That is where I am laying it – Directly on the corframed shoes of Adam Christianson.  Below are just a random handful of reported issues since Adam Christianson has taken office:

  • Estimated 50+ lawsuits/settlement
  • Millions and millions of dollars in settlements
  • Abuse of staff
  • Sexual harassment
  • Misappropriation of federal funds
  • Use of the office for political activities
  • Targeting of minorities
  • Unsaid and illegal rules to forcing admissions of crimes not committed
  • Outrageous expenditures on unwarranted military grade equipment
  • Jaunts overseas to train with foreign governments (with a vacation in Paris) ….

It never ends in that Department.

Before I continue, let me lay out the six most obvious attributes that could apply to the approach to power that would allow such a despicable culture to fester:

Hypocrite: a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, especially one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

Narcissistic Sociopath: Charming, Manipulative, Grandiose, Lying, Authoritarian, Secretive, Divisive

Despot: one exercising power tyrannically:  a person exercising absolute power in a brutal or oppressive way

Machiavellian: A person who believes and acts according to the axiom “the ends justifies the means

Politically astute: skillful at using this Political knowledge to their own advantage

Politically Narcissistic Ambitious: those who have claimed the political process as their own and usurped power from the rest of society.

Make no mistake – at the head of one of the most unaccountable local Law Enforcement agencies and a very calculating individual.    It would take a tome to recount Adam Christianson’s tenure and the blizzard of wrongdoing that he has been at the helm of.

However, let me discuss two disturbing stories recently posted at the Modesto Bee:

Stanislaus jails pick on inmates of only one race, lawsuit says

Sheriff accuses councilman of using CSO’s death to promote car seat event

Allow me to start by addressing the piece by Kevin Valine where he writes “Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson has accused Modesto Councilman Tony Madrigal of exploiting the recent death of a Sheriff’s Department community service officer for political gain.”

How rich, how very hypocritical and sociopathic.  This man is the same man who verbally abused and humiliated (with his group of minions) Deputy Dennis Wallace.   He destroyed his career, financially ruined his family and took away his livelihood.   His was referred to by Adam Christianson as Limp, Lame and Lazy.

Minutes after the tragic shooting death of Deputy Wallace on Nov 19th, the crocodile tears and false platitudes began.  The very same man who was humiliated daily and despised by Adam, was now a beloved fellow officer.   Leading the rightful honors due an officer slain in the line of duty was Adam.    Dennis Deserved a hero’s burial and honors, he did not deserve it to be conducted by the very man who made his live a living hell.

So, Sherriff Adam Christianson, please drop the act of outrage over a baby-seat event that featured the memory of a deceased officer.  You orchestrated the most sickening example of hypocrisy ever seen in this county.  You should be ashamed, but men of your cut don’t have that ability.

Now onto our second outrage reported in just the past 10 days….

Stanislaus jails pick on inmates of only one race, lawsuit says

This story is the most disconcerting – as the unchecked behaviors within the Sheriff’s Department are appearing to spread into the methods and tactics of law enforcement against citizens in the community.   Its one thing to run a sick, unaccountable clubhouse with unchecked rules – it is quite another to turn those diseased mannerisms into a Central Valley version of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.  The excellent story by Garth Stapley reads in part:

“In jail, Latino inmates are asked whether they are active or former gang members and housed accordingly without the option of saying neither, the civil lawsuit says. They then are treated differently than white, Asian or black gang members, the document says.  “Virtually no other county or state uses mere alleged gang association or membership to confine prisoners” in segregated housing, the lawsuit says.”

To underscore the seriousness of this, U.S. District Judge Lawrence O’Neill stated:

In case you might think the comparison to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp tactics –

The lawsuit also accuses Sheriff Adam Christianson and some of his command staff with violating federal law by depriving some Latino inmates of outdoor exercise and “sensory stimulation,” of using excessive force, and of failing to give inmates a meaningful chance to be reassigned to units with better conditions.

Sherriff Adam Christianson, if you think this is not serious, and that just another taxpayer funded settlement will come of it – think again.    You might want to pay a visit to another former Sherriff – Sherriff Lee Baca.    As Reported in the LA Times: Ex-L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca was sentenced to three years in prison in jail corruption scandal that is eerily similar to the  current mess you have been served with.

In the sentencing Judge Perry Anderson unleashed a scathing rebuke of the man who ran one of the nation’s largest law enforcement agencies for 15 years.  Excoriating Baca’s refusal to accept responsibility for having overseen and condoned the obstruction ploy carried out by subordinates, the judge portrayed him as a man driven by his desire to protect his own reputation and maintain control over the Sheriff’s Department.

Or perhaps review the fate of LA Ex-Sheriff Carona,  who was indicted in October 2007 on six felony corruption counts, including theft of honest services of an elected official, conspiracy and tampering with a witness.  He served 66 months in a federal prison.

Maybe quit spending so much time looking at yourself in the mirror admiring your Dress Blue uniform with Silver shoulder stars – and gaze at this picture of a few other Sherriffs who thought they were king and unaccountable…

Remember Adam, the long arm of the law comes from many places – not just from you.
