Numerous articles and op-eds across California including those owned by McClatchy have called for an end to the duel Sheriff/Coroner system. Legislation is working its way through Sacramento to do exactly that. Most of you have been on-record as supporting the separation.

During the recent Sheriffs election, many questions were posed to both candidates, (Lt. Dirkse firmly against it) not that it matters is that it takes action on your part, NOT the Sheriffs as they do not even have that power.

I ask that you do not punt this down the road waiting on legislation that may never see the light of day.

I ask you to take the bold step taken by the San Joaquin Board of Supervisors, and separate Sheriff/Coroner now.   The dual-office system has shown to be a hotbed of misuse and second guessing.

The recent op-ed by the Sacramento Bee “San Joaquin shows the way to end sheriff-coroner system” makes an excellent final point:

As criminal justice leaders, it’s our duty to ensure that our communities maintain confidence and trust in our criminal justice system. San Joaquin County’s decisive actions have shown that it’s possible to end the era of the intertwined sheriff-coroner’s office. Other counties should do the same.”

I look forward to your response.
